Bates College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college located in Lewiston, Maine, in the United States and was most recently ranked 21st in the nation in the 2011 US News Best Liberal Arts Colleges rankings. Bates College was founded in 1855 by abolitionists. Bates College is one of the first colleges in the United States to be coeducational from establishment, and is also the oldest continuously operating coeducational institution in New England

Bates College Tuition and Fees
The Bates College tuition and fees for 2011-2012 is $55,300. Costs for books, personal expenses and transportation are added to a student’s budget for the purpose of calculating financial need and awarding aid. Approximately 43 percent of enrolled students receive grant assistance from the College—the average grant among students receiving assistance in fall 2011 is $35,089 and the average financial aid package (grant, loan and work) is $38,700. All financial aid at Bates is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need.
