Montclair State University is a public research university located in the Upper Montclair section of Montclair, the Great Notch area of Little Falls, and Clifton, New Jersey. As of October 2009, there were 18,171 total enrolled students: 14,139 undergraduate students and 4,032 graduate students. Montclair State University is New Jersey’s second largest school, with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey being the first. It is also the state’s quickest growing school and currently sizes at 500 acres (2.0 km2), inclusive of the New Jersey School of Conservation, which attracts students statewide. More than 250 majors, minors and concentrations are offered.
Along with NJIT and Rutgers University, opportunities to pursue a Phd in biomedicine with its joint degree program with UMDNJ.[4] The university also offers articulation agreements with UMDNJ’s Medical, Dental and Physical Therapy programs. The school also offers such articulation agreements with Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, combining a Bachelors degree from Montclair with a Pharmacy Degree from the school.
The University is also a member of some of the more prominent professional organizations including the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, American Council on Education, Association of American Colleges and Universities and the Council of Graduate Schools. It is also the only University in the US to offer a doctorate program in pedagogy.

In including Montclair State University in its Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition, The Princeton Review commends the University’s campus-wide commitment to environmentally sound green building, alternative energy, recycling, and environmental conservation policies and programs.
Montclair State offers a course exploring narrative in video games. Amy Kuperinsky of the Star-Ledger writes, "The college course recognizes the fact that a career in video games does not mean locking yourself in the basement to play some fantastical saga to its conclusion. Nor is it a vocation to merely daydream about. It's a trade, an art to learn--one that, like other forms of entertainment, needs both stories and writers."

Montclair State University’s Graduate School held its Convocation ceremony on Monday, May 14 at the University’s Sprague Field. Many of the family and friends of the 1,079 candidates slated to receive master’s or doctoral degrees from the School were in attendance.

Montclair State University’s College of the Arts held its Convocation ceremony on Sunday, May 13 at the University’s Sprague Field. Family and friends of many of the 519 candidates slated to receive baccalaureate degrees from the College filled the stands.
Legendary dancer, choreographer, and arts educator, Jacques d’Amboise, delivered the Convocation address and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University. President Susan A. Cole, Board of Trustees member Rose Cali, and Dean Geoffrey Newman offered words of welcome and greeting.
The Leonardis Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Department of Broadcasting alumna Karen Horne ’08, vice president of Diversity Programs for NBC Entertainment, for her significant contributions to the fields of entertainment, television, and digital media.
The College of the Arts Distinguished Faculty Awards were presented to professors David Singer and John Czerkowciz. Dean Geoffrey Newman, who is retiring this June, received the College’s Distinguished Leader Award.

Brian Lehrer, host of WNYC Radio’s award-winning daily call-in program, The Brian Lehrer Show, delivered the Convocation address and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University.

Montclair State University today announced the creation of the Center for Entrepreneurship at the School of Business. A $1 million gift from the Mimi and Edwin Feliciano will fund the innovative new center and its entrepreneurial development program, which will support the University’s commitment to preparing students for success in today’s highly competitive global economy.
According to an Executive Order signed today by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, all state buildings will fly flags at half-staff on Thursday, May 10, 2012, “to honor the service and sacrifice of United States Army Sergeant Shauna Brocklebank Adams, 27, who grew up in Long Branch, graduated from Montclair State University in 2008, and enlisted in the United States Army in 2010. Sergeant Brocklebank Adams tragically lost her life on March 28, 2012 during a military training exercise in South Korea.”
Adams played lacrosse for Montclair State from 2004-2007 and was integral in the Red Hawks becoming a conference championship- and postseason-tournament team. One of five players in program history to score more than 200 points, Adams appeared in 65 games scoring 163 goals along with 50 assists. Montclair State went 51-16 during her four seasons and made the program’s first three postseason appearances, including the first NCAA trip in 2007.
In 2010, Adams enlisted in the U.S. Army and was recently promoted to Sergeant. On February 15, 2012, Adams married Kyle Adams, who survives her and is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.
