Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University, also known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is a public research university founded in 1957 located in Stony Brook, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Manhattan.
Stony Brook University is one of the four university centers and is considered a flagship campus of the SUNY system. The main campus is home to more than 24,500 students,[4] and 138,560 alumni. The University is organized by schools and colleges, including the Medical, Dental, and Graduate School, and several branch campuses including Stony Brook Manhattan and Stony Brook Southampton. Stony Brook is one of 63 leading research universities in the American Association of Universities (AAU). Stony Brook University Medical Center is Suffolk County’s only tertiary hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center, and is the only academic medical center on Long Island. The University also co-manages Brookhaven National Labs under a contract from the U.S. Department of Energy.

- Carl Safina Wins 2012 Orion Book Award - Wed, 16 May 2012
Professor Carl Safina, founding President of the Blue Ocean Institute who teaches in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University, and is a visiting professor in the Center for Communicating Science there, has been named the winner of the 2012 Orion Book Award for “The View From Lazy Point: A Natural Year in an Unnatural World.”
- SUNY Medical Campuses Team to Expand WTC Health Program Services in Clinical Center of Excellence - Mon, 14 May 2012
Stony Brook University’s Long Island Clinical Center of Excellence (LI-CCE), which is part of the World Trade Center Health Program, has expanded to SUNY Downstate Medical Center. The new clinic site enables a dedicated team of healthcare professionals to care for thousands more non-FDNY 9/11 responders living or working in Brooklyn (Kings County). On May 14, an official opening celebration will take place at the satellite location to mark its opening.
- Overuse Injuries, Rehab Techniques, Among Topics at Stony Brook Sports Medicine Symposium - Wed, 09 May 2012
With thousands of children and teens participating in sports year-round, overuse injuries are commonplace. Healthcare experts in sports medicine will tackle this issue and other topics at Stony Brook Orthopaedic Associate’s Sports Medicine Update: Controversies in Sports Medicine. The continuing medical education (CME) symposium for healthcare professionals is also open to the community. It takes place on May 11, from 7:00 a.m., to 2:30 p.m., at the Student Activities Center on the Stony Brook University Campus.

A team of researchers from the Stony Brook University Department of Physics & Astronomy along with colleagues from the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in Spain, explain a puzzling water anomaly in a paper published in the May 9 edition of Physical Review Letters entitled, “Anomalous Nuclear Quantum Effects in Ice.”
- SBU Partners with SC Transit to Expand Saturday Bus Service for Students - Fri, 04 May 2012
A new sustainable partnership between SBU Transit and Suffolk County Transit will soon provide Stony Brook University students expanded Saturday bus service to more off-campus locations for shopping, dining and leisure activities between Stony Brook University, Smith Haven Mall, Port Jefferson Village and points in between. The new Saturday service is being made available at no additional cost to students and requires only a student identification card for access.

Is eating seafood a good or bad thing? The answer could be both from the information that will be presented at a public lectured sponsored by Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS). “Public Health Implications of Seafood Consumption,” presented by Dr. Jaymie R. Meliker, Assistant Professor, Graduate Program in Public Health, Department of Preventive Medicine, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, on May 4. The lecture is open to all and a reception follows. It will be held at 7:30 PM on SBU’s Southampton Campus in the Duke Lecture Hall-Chancellors Hall.
- Martian Rover 'Opportunity' Finds Evidence Of Water Flows At Ancient Impact Crater Endeavour - Thu, 03 May 2012
Evidence of ancient water at a Martian crater is the latest in a long series of discoveries by a surprisingly long-lived Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity, according to a paper published in the May 4 edition of the journal Science entitled, “Ancient Impact and Aqueous Processes at Endeavour Crater, Mars.” The latest discovery was made at the rim of the Endeavour Crater, a large ancient impact crater on Mars measuring 14 miles in diameter.
