University of Hawaii at Manoa

The University of Hawaii at Mānoa is a public, co-educational university and is the flagship campus of the greater University of Hawaiʻi system. The school is located in Mānoa, an urban neighborhood community of Honolulu CDP, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, United States, approximately three miles east and inland from downtown Honolulu and one mile (1.6 km) from Ala Moana and Waikīkī. The campus occupies the eastern half of the mouth of the greater Mānoa Valley. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is governed by the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and a semi-autonomous Board of Regents, which in turn hires a president to be administrator. The University of Hawaii at Mānoa was founded in 1907 as a land grant college of agriculture and mechanical arts. In 1912 it was renamed the College of Hawaii and moved to its present location. William Kwai Fong Yap petitioned the territorial legislature six years later for university status which led to another renaming to the University of Hawai’i in 1920. This is also the founding year of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Pacific New Media's summer program begins with this exceptional overview of the process of creating websites:For most people, the web exists as a place to explore and consume information. But what happens when your role changes from explorer and consumer to that of author, designer, or disseminator of ideas? What skills and knowledge do you need to create a new web page or to maintain an existing website? What possibilities exist to improve your pages or to add major new features?PNM offers a broad range of courses designed to address these and many other issues facing the web designer. The very breadth of subjects and issues can be daunting for novice or prospective web designers. This workshop helps by providing a general overview of the web design process. Discover where the pieces of the web design puzzle fit together and learn which tools (e.g., Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Photoshop) and information you need to build better websites.Colin Macdonald is the director of web operations for the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He instituted the first multimedia courses at the UHM Department of Communication, where he taught multimedia design and development for over a decade. Previously, he directed creative services for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. As an art director for A&M Records in Canada, he gained extensive knowledge of print media. He has conducted traditional media and multimedia training courses in Asia, Hawaiʻi, and the U.S. mainland for nearly 20 years. He is a core faculty member of Pacific New Media.
